| What is an AWA? | Some Government departments require you to negotiate an AWA (Australian Workplace Agreement). An AWA is a contract of employment between the employer and the employee which is negotiated every year. Usually people have the potential to earn more money under an AWA, however they may be required to work longer hours and do not have the collective bargaining power of union. There are both pros and cons for agreeing to be employed under an AWA. You must be aware of your rights and negotiate hard to determine if an AWA is best for you.
| | How many Governments does Australia have? | Australia has a Federal system of government. This means that we are made up of a Federation of different States and Territories. Excluding the local governments in each State, Australia has nine separate governments operating simultaneously - the Commonwealth Government and a government for each State and Territory. What is the difference between the Commonwealth Government and State and Territory Governments? The Australian Constitution limits the power of the Government by allowing the Commonwealth Government and the State and Territory governments to exercise only certain powers. The Commonwealth Government only has the power to make laws in relation to certain matters, which affect the whole of Australia, such as: taxation, defence, customs, immigration, etc. State and Territory governments may only make laws in relation certain State and local matters, such as health, education, transport, etc.
